BIO – Carol Banks
Carol Banks is a life - long Detroiter who has a passion for public servitude. Carol is a former elected member of the Detroit Public School Board at Large. There she served as chair of the Public Health and Safety Committee and was a member of the Human Resource and Audit Committee. During her time there she fought to reverse the decision to eliminate the Safeway Transportation contract with DPS which saved over 90 Detroit jobs.
She also assist seniors who are raising grandchildren with transportation, medical, and property tax issue and have hosted Violence Prevention workshops to combat offenses within Detroit Public Schools. For the past 10 years Carol has diligently labored on behalf of citizens as a Policy Analyst and now Chief of Staff for Detroit City Council. Prior to that appointment Mrs. Banks worked with the legislative body as Chief of Staff for two State Representatives in Lansing. She remained in that position for 6 years. From 1999 to 2006 Carol operated as a major team player for NSO (the Neighborhood Service Organization). There she created, ran and helped find funding for the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program (raised millions in grant dollars). As Carol progressed from one position to another she left constituents with a legacy of servitude and opportunity.
She is a progressive leader who is involved in public policy, grassroots organizing, and assisting citizens through political bureaucracy whether it’s issues with DTE, city taxes or other matters. For the past 8 years Carol has mentored graduating seniors of Detroit Public Schools and opened the doors of opportunity by personally sponsoring scholarships for their first year of college. Also working with young people, not just getting employment but creating career opportunities. Mrs. Banks is a former board member of Morningside and U-Snap-Bac. She is a member of the NAACP. In addition to her passion for public service, she is a wife, mother of two and grandmother of three. She loves her family, community, and most of all being a public servant for the City of Detroit & state of Michigan.
