Grant Priorities
Grant priorities include:
The primary purpose is to create and maintain walking, hiking, or skiing trails open to the public in Wisconsin. This includes, but is not limited to:
- increasing access for people with disabilities;
- identification of trail locations; surveying; purchase of materials; construction;
- clean-up activities; repairs of trail surfaces, railings, or existing signage; and fees for necessary professional services.
The secondary purpose is to enhance and promote quiet trails through activities including: habitat improvement adjacent to the trail;
- development, creation and installation of directional or explanatory signage and trail guide booklets; and
- modest costs of events designed to increase awareness and/or use of quiet trails.

Eligibility Requirements
- Large-scale total daily maximum load (TMDL) projects – Only agricultural projects designed to meet EPA-approved TMDLs are eligible. Funding is limited to $600,000.
- Large-scale non-TMDL projects – Only agricultural projects implementing state agricultural performance standards and prohibitions are eligible. They may be in any area to protect or restore surface water or groundwater. Funding is limited to $600,000.
- Small-scale TMDL projects – Agricultural and urban nonpoint source control projects designed to meet EPA-approved TMDL goals are eligible for funding. Grants are limited to $225,000.
- Small-scale non-TMDL projects – Only agricultural projects implementing state agricultural performance standards and prohibitions are eligible. Grants are limited to $225,000.

Matching Requirements
- Successful grant applicants enter into a contractual agreement with the DNR to commit funds for the purpose of implementing grant-eligible best management practices (BMPs).
- Grantees providing grant funds to private landowners must enter into a cost-share agreement (CSA) between the grantee and the landowner, listing the BMPs and establishing the conditions and considerations under which a cost-share recipient agrees to install and maintain the BMPs listed
