Pittsburgh sits at the confluence of 3 major rivers and contends with flooding on a regular basis. The non-profit Watersheds of South Pittsburgh works to address flooding in the Saw Mill Run watershed, an especially hard hit urban stream running through 12 municipalities. Various plans for addressing the issues in the watershed were developed, but implementation had been stymied over the years due, in part, to the challenges of having so many jurisdictions and differing perceptions and priorities. Watersheds of South Pittsburgh reached out to WaterNow to help put together a multi-municipal approach as a key strategy for capturing runoff and addressing localized flooding.

The project focused on breaking down barriers to collaboration and effective management of the watershed. The deliverables included a template agreement and a roadmap for the 12 municipalities to coordinate on stormwater management, which stands as an example that can be replicated in other watersheds throughout the region and beyond.
