Distributed infrastructure on Private Property

Much if not most of the opportunity for installing distributed infrastructure is on private property; 60-70% of the land in urban areas is privately owned.

Private land includes commercial, industrial and institutional (CII) properties as well as residential tracts of all kinds. Upscaling distributed water infrastructure on private properties can raise a number of installation and O&M issues. Communities are finding that navigating these issues is not complex, but can involve some new skill sets a little outside of the traditional utility wheelhouse.

This Toolkit section covers engaging with and motivating private property owners to adopt distributed infrastructure of various kinds, and successful strategies for ensuring that these publicly financed strategies provide benefits to the community over the long term.
