Millions of Americans take water service for granted every day. Turn on the tap, and clean water flows out. Flush the toilet, and dirty water goes away. With reliable water service, people don’t have to think twice about the infrastructure that brings water to their homes and then safely returns it to the environment – but everyone should be concerned with the fragility of those systems.

Imagine a Day Without Water 2019 is an annual initiative  to educate America about the value of water. Every year, approximately 1000 organizations sign on to increase our awareness about water supply and the infrastructure that supports it.

America’s water infrastructure is aging and failing. Water infrastructure is the lifeline of a community, and it faces various challenges that look different for each region, requiring resilient, local solutions. Reinvestment in water systems should be a national priority, and since we launched our organization, WaterNow has been focused on that reinvestment and emphasis on local solutions in the form of distributed infrastructure. Distributed solutions like onsite non-potable water systems, green streets and smart leak detection devices offer a sustainable, cost-effective path for supplementing our water infrastructure. It's the whole reason we launched Tap into Resilience and our toolkit designed to help water leaders implement these projects.

Despite our work, we realize that in order to live in a sustainable world that effectively manages its water, we need both innovative solutions and a supportive public opinion.

We view Imagine a Day Without Water as an opportunity for everyone to get educated about our local water systems and challenges. If you're a local, elected leader or water utility manager and staff, we urge you to sign up for Imagine a Day Without Water and pledge your support through various initiatives. Here are some of the things that you can do to participate:

- Host an open house for your community! Educate your community members by letting them tour the often invisible water infrastructure facilities they live near. If you have implemented a green infrastructure solution like a rain garden or green roof, encourage everyone to visit it and witness the benefits it provides such as supporting the natural environment.

- Get water in the news! Encourage people to value water and the infrastructure that provides it by contributing a guest column, featuring a utility in the local news, or aligning a publication with the national day of action on October 23rd.

- Have a conversation online. Jump on Twitter, LinkedIn, and other platforms at your disposal and sign your posts with #ValueWater. There are many ways to inform your community about water.

- Implement a water solution! Tap into Resilience provides multiple, free resources to help water leaders connect with experts and realize local innovations in their communities. Contact us, or utilize our Tap into Resilience Toolkit to brainstorm about your new initiative.

Sign up at Imagine a Day Without Water to join us and the near 1000 organizations that are a part of this event. Together, we can make sure that everyone values our most precious resource.
