Western Montana Conservation Commission
Creating a Green Stormwater Infrastructure Program in Montana Our Approach Project OutcomesProject Goal
The Western Montana Conservation Commission (WMCC) was created by the Montana State Legislature in 2023, to protect and improve western Montana’s resources, including water quality. Their Stormwater Advisory Council aims to kickstart a statewide green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) program, with the eventual goal of adopting GSI as a standard practice in Montana. The WMCC plans to use GSI to help meet their water quality goals, reduce flooding, and generate other co-benefits. The project aims to support the Stormwater Advisory Council’s expert panel as they develop a GSI plan to further the WMCC’s goal to protect and improve the quality of Western Montana’s resources.
Our Approach
WaterNow is partnering with the Stormwater Advisory Council of the Western Montana Conservation Commission (WMCC) to develop a statewide green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) program.
WaterNow will conduct a comprehensive review of successful GSI programs in comparable states and identify best practices and strategies in GSI implementation. The project team will also work to identify potential funding sources for local and state-wide projects. We will engage local partners to build public trust and support for stormwater solutions and policies that ease GSI implementation. The project will produce a final report of findings, strategies, and action items, as well as a scalable model for GSI implementation and funding that can be used across the state and elsewhere.
