Fort Lupton, CO
Waterwise land use planning sets stage for sustainable growth Our Approach Project OutcomesProject Goal
The City of Fort Lupton is a historic agricultural and industrial hub located in Weld County, Colorado. As the community continues to grow and evolve, the City is proactively working to strengthen the connection between land use and water management to ensure that new development aligns with its long-term water supply capacity and conservation goals. This effort will ensure Fort Lupton’s future growth remains sustainable and resilient in the face of climate change, drought, and increasing development pressure.
Our Approach
WaterNow Alliance (WaterNow) and Western Resource Advocates (WRA) are partnering with the City of Fort Lupton to integrate waterwise principles into the City’s landscape standards, long-range planning documents, and implementation strategies. The team will provide technical assistance to support the City in complying with state regulations limiting turfgrass, incorporating water efficiency principles into the Comprehensive Plan update, and evaluating water-efficient future land use scenarios. WaterNow and WRA will also research and recommend programs and outreach techniques to help bring these strategies to life.
